Epilepsy Facts
- Epilepsy is a generic term used to define a variety of seizure
disorders. A person with recurring seizures is said to have epilepsy.
- Epilepsy is a disorder, not a disease.
- Epilepsy is not mental retardation, mental illness or contagious.
- More than 2.5 million people in the United States, one percent of
the population, have epilepsy, with about 15,800 in the greater Dayton
area.
- The correct initial diagnosis and appropriate therapy saves money
spent on inappropriate medications, office or emergency room visits
for poorly controlled seizures and adverse side effects.
- There are several new medications now available to treat seizures,
some of which may offer a patient equivalent or improved control of
seizures with fewer side effects.
- About 30% of seizure patients cannot achieve adequate control of
seizures despite optimal medical therapy. A significant percentage of
these patients may be candidates for surgical treatment of their
seizures.
