About National Brain Tumor Action Week

Brain Tumor Action Week is the collective effort of the brain tumor community- patients, families, friends, health care providers, and others to educate the public about brain tumors.  The week is highlighted by a congressional luncheon and visits to Capital Hill in Washington, D.C. A main objective is the need for increased funding for brain tumor research and the development of access to better treatments. The week is sponsored by the National Brain Tumor Coalition. www.nabraintumor.org/

Brain Tumor Action Week - May 1-7, 2006
The Wallace-Kettering Neuroscience Institute along with the SW Ohio Brain Tumor Support Group participated in Brain Tumor Action Week.. Several displays were placed at Kettering Medical Center to highlight the week. A newspaper ad highlighted the Week along with the many services for brain tumor patients including Gamma Knife, specially trained neuroscience nurses, innovative neuroimaging, computer assisted surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and a monthly support group. Brain tumor patients and their families were encouraged to attend the support group and share their stories.

The May 2006 brain tumor support group highlighted it’s 12th anniversary and celebrated Brain Tumor Action Week by writing a name of a brain tumor patient on a hat with the date of diagnosis and tumor type. The “Hidden Under Our Hats” project is a display of hats to bring awareness to the many patients who have brain tumors. The display is in Washington D.C. during the Week. Patients were encouraged to call their congressman and senators and speak to them about research monies for brain tumor research. Survivors were encouraged to share their stories with others.


Brain Tumor Action Week - May 1-6, 2005
The Wallace-Kettering Neuroscience Institute along with the SW Ohio Brain Tumor Support Group participated. A large display was place outside the Kettering Hospital cafeteria to highlight the Week, tumor types, diagnosis, neuroimaging, treatment modalities, support ,education and research. Table tents were placed on the cafeteria table with the common symptoms of brain tumors and information about services at the Wallace-Kettering Neuroscience Institute to treat brain tumors. The support group began writing their stories to share with others. The support group web site is being updated to allow for easier access to information for the community.


Brain Tumor Action Week - May 2-8, 2004
The Wallace-Kettering Neuroscience Institute along with the SW Ohio Brain Tumor Support Group participated. Table tents were placed on the cafeteria table with the common symptoms of brain tumors and information about services at the Wallace-Kettering Neuroscience Institute. The support group participated in the “Hidden Under Our Hats” project. We sent 16 hats from our local group with their first name, date of diagnosis and type of tumor written inside. The gallery of hats came from across the nation. They were sent to Washington DC in the Upper Senate Park and will be used as a traveling exhibit to highlight people throughout the country affected by brain tumors.


Brain Tumor Action Week - May 4-10, 2003
The Wallace-Kettering Neuroscience Institute along with the SW Ohio Brain Tumor Support Group participated. Brain Tumor Action Week and Gamma Knife displays were available for viewing at the Town and Country Shopping Center. Educational materials were available. The display highlighted the week, diagnosis, neuroimaging, treatment, interesting cases, support and tumor types. Community members were encouraged to sign up for guided tours at the Wallace-Kettering Neuroscience Institute. Giveaways regarding the week were available. Personnel were available to answer community questions and phone contact numbers were available.


Brain Tumor Action Week - May 5-11, 2002
Renamed this year to promote action

The Wallace-Kettering Neuroscience Institute along with the SW Ohio Brain Tumor Support Group participated. Dr. Herbert Newton, neuro oncologist, presented grand rounds to physicians highlighting new treatments for brain tumors. A large Brain Tumor Action Week display was in the Kettering Hospital cafeteria lobby. The display highlighted the week, neuro imaging, treatment, patient education and support. A case study was presented. The Gamma department conducted an open house and offered tours with giveaways.


Brain Tumor Awareness Week - May 6-12, 2001
The Wallace-Kettering Neuroscience Institute along with the SW Ohio Brain Tumor Support Group participated. An article appeared in the Dayton Daily Newspaper. The article highlighted the Week, different diagnostic technologies, and the SW Ohio Brain tumor Support Group. A large Brain Tumor Awareness Week display was in the Kettering Hospital cafeteria lobby. The display highlighted diagnosis, treatment, research and support for brain tumors.


Brain Tumor Awareness Week - April 30 - May 6, 2000
The Wallace-Kettering Neuroscience Institute along with the SW Ohio Brain Tumor Support Group participated in the Week. An article appeared in the Dayton Daily News to highlight the week, the service available at the Wallace-Kettering Neuroscience Institute to treat brain tumors. A display in the Kettering Hospital cafeteria lobby highlighting different types of brain tumors and treatment.
